Washington Redskins name Kirk Cousins the starter over RG3

When the Washington Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III, they never imagined the mess that he’d become. It looked like drafting him would be the solution to their long-standing quarterback troubles, but unfortunately he only made it worse. To try to alleviate the situation, the Redskins picked up two more quarterbacks, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, both of which didn’t really fix the problem. At this point, it’s hard to really sympathize for the Redskins, because they’re really not doing themselves any favors. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden addressed the media on Monday to discuss their starter. It was clear that...

Football is meant to be played in the snow

You could almost hear the ghost of John Facenda’s somber basso vocce intoning “in the frozen tundra of Green Bay. . .” If you were watching a 1:00 game on Sunday, there’s a good chance you were squinting to make out the players or the yard lines. No less than five games were impacted by weather, none more so than Philadelphia vs. Detroit. Rather than talk about the fact that football is a game that was almost MEANT to be played in snow and mud, I’ll let the pictures tell the story. In Green Bay, it was not so...

Are the Jets a legitimate playoff contender?

How do the Jets keep doing this? They’re “good week, bad week” performances were originally thrown out there as joke, but it’s no joke. They beat New England, then don’t even show up against Cincinnati, then beat New Orleans?  What’s with the odd week dominance.  Or, what’s with the even week ineptitude? C’mon Jets, this isn’t a trend, it’s a crap shoot. If you look a little closer at the Jets’ run to 5-4, however, a few trends do emerge.  New York is much better at home, 4-1, than on the road, where they’re 1-3.  The Jets are 2-1...

Seeing Red: Should Washington Change Its Name?

The name “Redskins” has been controversial for a lot longer than just the past couple months, but the pressure to change the name has gotten more intense in the last few weeks, culminating in the introduction of a bill in Congress compelling the team to adopt a new nickname. Let’s leave aside the appropriateness of lawmakers intervening in pro sports in general and in this issue in particular and tackle the various arguments being advanced (I know the phrases “Redskins” and “tackle” don’t go together that well this season, but we’ll try). Here’s a breakdown of the pro and...

NFC East: How Many Wins Will it Take?

Remember the old commercial…How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?  No?  Well, your dad remembers it.  Go ask him.  But today’s question is even simpler. Could, for the second time in NFL history, a division fail to produce even ONE .500 team?  It’s possible.  In fact, looking at this crappy division, it may even be likely. As an aside, I am aware that this is the second picture of a dejected Eli Manning I have used in a week.   But hey, no one does dejected like Eli.  And he’s got two...
