Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters in just a couple months and with the release of the second official trailer, we dive into everything we know about the new spinoff.

For all you “don’t put spoilers out there” freaks for a movie that has both prequels and sequels, consider this your warning there are possible spoilers ahead.

The Star Wars timeline for Rogue One is between the original trilogy and the prequels

When Star Wars: A New Hope was first released, the plot centered around a captured Princess Leia who entrusted R2D2 with the blueprints of the Empire’s weapon, The Death Star.

The details of how these plans came into Leia’s hands and how they were originally stolen is the central plot line for Rogue One.

For a little more background on the timeline, check this history lesson from Star Wars wiki:

[From the prequel, The Clone Wars] The Death Star was designed by Geonosians led by Archduke Poggle the Lesser, a member of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. During the Battle of Geonosis, he gave the plans to Count Dooku, who decided to ferry them to his master Darth Sidious, who would keep them safe. Dooku was intercepted by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in his solar sailer’s hangar, but defeated them and fled from Yoda by dropping a pillar on the two unconscious Jedi. Dooku met Sidious in the Works on Coruscant, and construction commenced three years later.

And here’s the official Rogue One: A Star Wars Story synopsis from StarWars.com:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Meet your new favorite Star Wars female, Jyn Erso

The catalyst for Rogue One centers around Jyn Erso, whose father (played by Mads Mikkelsen) was captured by the Empire and designed The Death Star. Some on reddit have theorized Jyn’s father intentionally designed the ultimate weapon with a glaring flaw in order to help the Rebel Alliance ultimately blow it up.

Which would make sense because Jyn’s parents were captured by the Empire when she was just 15 years old causing her to grow up as “reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined.” However when Mon Mothma, leader of the Alliance, intercepts a message about an imminent weapons test from Jyn’s father, she not only recruits Jyn but promotes her to sergeant.

Played by Felicity Jones, Jyn Erso will likely take on the fan favorite role and cult following Leia and Rey have already experienced.

Is this a Jedi monument?

Let it be known when a major movie like Star Wars releases a new trailer, I head straight to reddit for the theories and this one did not disappoint.

Check out what one redditor found that appears to be an ancient Jedi monument which is now in ruin:

Could this be a shot from the Jedi mecca of Jedha?

Jedha was a small desert moon located in the galaxy’s Inner Rim, which had a cold climate due to its lasting winter, and an atmosphere that was breathable to its human population. The historical and spiritual significance of Jedha led the moon to become a world of worship for those who believed in the Force, and a holy site for pilgrims who sought spiritual guidance. Some time before the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire occupied the moon to control its resources that were once used by the Jedi Order to build lightsabers.

Obviously there’s no way to tell from a single shot but if there’s anything Star Wars fans love, it’s ancient Jedi history and lore.

Bring. It. On.

Darth fcking Vader is back

We only get a glimpse of Vader but just look at this ‘I’m gonna fck someone up’ strut. LOOK AT IT.

Speaking of struts…

Is there anything more badass than a cape strut through the water surrounded by dead stormtroopers?

Ben Mendelsohn plays the character of Vader’s right hand man, Director Orson Krennic, who likely wants to squash the Jedi and any Rogue One efforts ASAP.

But if this gif proves anything, Krennic has the balls to wear white to your wedding and you won’t say shit about it.

We have no idea who these cloaked figures are…

Part of the fun with a new movie is figuring out each character and how they fit into the Star Wars universe. Enter these two characters whose face isn’t revealed.

The first shot has a Vader feel to it but since he’s not wearing a helmet under the cloak, it’s highly unlikely this is Vader.

So who is it? Are these two gifs of the same guy? Is it a sith or a spy for the Alliance?

*pounds fist on the table* REVEAL YOUR SECRETS.

Rogue One will be edgier than ‘The Force Awakens’

Let’s not kid ourselves, J.J. Abrams killed it with The Force Awakens and it was about as perfect of a Star Wars films as you can get.

But fans are craving something edgier which Rogue One appears to be the emo dyed-black hair with tear drop tattoo of the original movie saga.

And I’m 100 percent here for it.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ releases during prime-time holiday season

Any given year there are two big movie moments for perceived blockbusters: the summer and the holidays. And with many families making a tradition of seeing a movie together around Christmas, Disney knows you’ll probably pony up to see a Star Wars movie.

Which is exactly why Rogue One will be released December 16th. Because if you aren’t seeing this movie with your family,  you’ll likely have a few days off around Christmas and New Year’s and Disney has their eye on your wallet.

This is just the beginning for Star Wars spinoffs

Back when Disney purchased the Star Wars franchise, a trilogy following The Empire Strikes Back timeline was immediately announced to enormous fan fare.

Since then, Star Wars Anthology Series was announced to include Rogue One, an untitled young Han Solo film and a yet to be announced additional movie in 2020.

The expanded universe of Star Wars is unlimited so as long as there’s demand for more, Disney will continue to give us a new movie for the 6-10 years.

There are numerous gems throughout the new Rogue One trailer that fans are breaking down with possible theories because that’s just what we do.

And even if you aren’t a fanatical freak about Star Wars, this movie looks like a fun standalone film even newbies will enjoy.
