Hot Topics in the Gaming World You Need to Know About

Welcome back to another edition of Hot Topics!

It was a rather low-key week. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is all but confirmed at this point as leaks from retailers have indicated the sequel will be released this November. While game news was lackluster, game industry news was at the forefront this week. Nintendo posted the first loss in company history, EA may be getting bought, and Activision’s parent company is considering a major reorganization.

General Gaming News

Well the cat’s pretty much out of the bag at this point: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be the next Call of Duty title and will be launched on November 13, 2012. It’s a little fitting that a patriotic game such as Call of Duty will be released the week after Election Day, unlike Halo 4 (Way to ensure the young voters won’t show up at the ballot box, Microsoft).

The latest patch for Skyrim contains information that hints at future DLC, including Snow Elves and crossbows.

Cryptic Studios issued a statement the other day regarding a security breach. The MMO developer was hacked back in December 2010 but only recently discovered the breach.

Sony’s been in the news quite a bit of late for its financial struggles, but it’s not the only gaming giant to have difficulties. For the first time in its history, Nintendo posted a loss. The company lost $530 million in the 2011 fiscal year.

If you are looking to get more out of your Vita, then you may want to take a gander at the Nyko Speaker Stand. The stand provides stereo sound while also doubling as a charger for the handheld.

Last week, we mentioned that BioWare, EA, and Sony were in talks to bring Operations to the PS3. Well whatever the holdup was, it has been resolved. All future operations will be available to PS3 Mass Effect players.

Nintendo — Wii U, Wii, & 3DS

Wii U will not be fully revealed at E3; Nintendo is keeping some things quiet such as pricing and the exact launch date.

On the bright side, digital downloads will be available at launch. That feature will be coming to the 3DS, too, as New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be available both in stores as well as digitally.

It is highly unlikely that Crysis 3 will be available on the Wii U.

Changes are in store for Super Smash Bros.

A leaked Rayman Legends trailer offers a glimpse of the Wii U in action, so check it out and see how the new console is measuring up.

The latest firmware update for the 3DS is now live, and if you need some help in learning how to create and label folders, check out this helpful article.

Want a purple 3DS? A Sam’s Club listing shows a Midnight Purple 3DS but no other details, leading to speculation that a purple model is in the works. However, nothing official has been released by Nintendo, so take it with a grain of salt.

Adam Stevinson

Adam Stevinson is a Colorado native and proud graduate of Colorado State University. Baseball was always his first love growing up, and Adam is a die-hard Rockies fan. The Rockies’ run to the pennant in 2007 was the greatest sporting experience of his life, and yes, Holliday touched the plate. Adam’s love of sports extends beyond baseball to include football (both college and the NFL), tennis, and curling. An avid gamer, Adam practically grew up with games. Some of his earliest memories involve watching his brother play Zelda and Metal Gear on the NES. The first game Adam was ever able to defeat his brother was Goldeneye on the N64, and it’s been downhill for The Bro ever since. The Xbox 360 is his preferred console with FPS his genre of choice. Halo is his favorite game. When he’s not engaged in virtual combat or bemoaning the current lack of competence amongst Colorado sports teams, Adam can most likely be found reading, either military history or thrillers. He has a passion for history and loves learning about how the past has shaped the present. Other hobbies include movies, softball, trivia, skiing, and exploring this breathtaking state. He will never turn down a game of ping pong.
