I am slightly disappointed in this year’s Summer of Arcade for a few reasons. First and foremost, every arcade title is priced at $14.99, which is an appropriate price for a quality game like Limbo, but the previous arcade titles were inferior and has far less value.
During week four of Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade event, I could honestly say I'm finally excited again for a game coming out. Uber Entertainment launched Monday Night Combat for the reasonable price of $14.99. The main reason I say this because Monday Night Combat features bacon and bacon makes everything better!
Monday Night Combat is a class-based, third person shooter . . . you have to love them. In all honesty this game reminds me of a third person version of Team Fortress and that’s what the developers aimed for in attempts to pay homage to one of the greatest Valve titles ever. Monday Night Combat was developed on Unreal Engine 3. (What hasn’t been these days?) Players will be immersed into a lethal futuristic combat arena, guaranteed to produce an action experience unlike any other. Monday Night Combat combines intense fighting, finishing moves, and a gameshow like atmosphere. Think of Gladiator, but in the year 3010.
Hit the title/read more to continue reading on the awaited gem from the Summer of Arcade...
Monday Night Combat is a game unlike any other, pitting teams of six against each other, Orange versus Blue, the Hotshots versus the Icemen. These two teams are fighting to get the opposing team’s money ball!
Waves of robots will spawn at your team’s base and will follow a path towards the enemy’s money ball. Help escort your robots towards the enemies money ball, because they will encounter the opposing enemy robots and will all come to a halt until all are destroyed.
The robots will spawn automatically, but to overwhelm your opponent and win you have to manually spawn a wave of robots for $100. You earn money for killing opponents and robots. Players can also collect coins that fall from fallen robots to get a little extra cash. There is also a mascot, Bullseye, in the arena that runs around every once in awhile. When players hit Bullseye, earn some cash and drops coins. Sometimes when Bullseye, is killed the fallen mascot will reward players with bacon! Bacon is an upgrade that will make your player so much more awesome, like real bacon, but be careful what you are doing as you only receive this upgrade for that life.
Meanwhile, while all of this action is going on you’re also fighting six human opponents that are trying to accomplish the same goal as you . . . get to the money ball. You and your teammates will want to take advantage of all six class types in Monday Night Combat to be a successful and win the money ball!
There are six unique classes to choose from in Monday Night Combat and they are:
Tank – Modern Day Grunt, Blue-Collar Warrior, fearless in battle and relishes his role as the point of attack. Notable DNA includes Ray Lewis. Primary weapon is a Jet Engine Gun; secondary weapon is a Laser Railgun.
Sniper – All who take the field fear the Sniper. An MNC sniper have DNA from some of the greatest snipers in video game history, stays up late night drawing plays, practices relentlessly, does nothing to jeopardize his performance on game day. Notable DNA Hardcore gamer champions from MLG, WCG, and WSVG. Likes playing Monday Night Combat, practicing Monday Night Combat, talking about Monday Night Combat, drawing up plays for Monday Night Combat; dislikes almost everything else. Primary weapon is the sniper rifle; secondary weapon is an SMG.
Support – You can’t win without some support, uses extensive knowledge in cyberbiology and medicine to keep his team sharp, alert, and on the battlefield longer than their opponents. Can build turrets and hack turrets. Notable DNA Leonardo DaVinci, Steve Jobs. Primary weapon is a Healgun; secondary weapon a shotgun.
Gunner – Slow and thoughtful, doesn’t panic. Notable DNA 1988 Washington Redskins offensive line. Primary weapon a minigun; secondary weapon a Mortar!
Assassin – A female fighter that’s deadly, quiet, and invisible. Dreams of a society free from bondage. Likes, substance over style, being feared, the roar of the crowd, the rush of the kill! Primary weapon is a dagger; secondary weapon Shurikens (throwing stars)
Monday Night Combat, features two distinct of game modes:
Crossfire – pits teams of players against each other over Xbox Live. An endless stream of robots fighting to take over the enemy’s money ball supports each team; overwhelming your opponent’s stream of robots will be key in your victory.
Each class also has three abilities that can be upgraded as the player earns cash and gains sponsorships. Monday Night Combat also features three tiers of sponsorships:
· Silver
· Gold
Display players will have a purple bar at the bottom of their screen that will fill up as they kill opponents and bots. Once the purple bar is full and you are all “juiced” up, hitting the left and right bumpers simultaneously will activate the juice and make you an instant kill machine! You can also collect juice boxes that have fallen from robots or other players.
The maps are very well designed and have some vertically to them as well. The combat arenas are suspended at high altitudes and falling out of bounds will result in your player’s immediate death. However, if you are launched from the map you have one last chance to save yourself.
Most players in Monday Night Combat, have a jet pack. You can activate this jet pack by pressing “Y” on your controller. Be careful if you have not upgraded your “hover” ability it will only last a short time.
By the time this is posted tonight I will probably have played or seen the Blitz game mode a little, but as I write this I have not touched it all. I really wanted to become acclimated with the online multiplayer, but judging from the multiplayer and training mode, Blitz will be wave, after wave, after wave of increasingly harder robots as they try to overwhelm your money ball. If you’re playing single player the game’s AI will recognize this and adjust the difficulty accordingly. Judging by how fun the game is as a whole, this game mode looks to be just as fun and challenging.
What’s Monday Night Combat without cheerleaders? Absolutely boring! So luckily the guys at Uber Entertainment, have provided us with a fun, bubbly, and energetic ringside girl.
