The Great Pink Debate: Is it Ever Ok to Wear To a Sporting Event?

What is the first thing you think about when you look at the picture of Jessica Simpson in a pink Tony Romo jersey?

If your anything like me, you automatically assume that this girl hasn't the first clue about football or general sports for that matter.

For the past several years, the NFL and other sports leagues alike have been trying to expand their market share into the female realm of fashion.

In doing so, most of the leagues have assumed if you slap pink on sports merchandise, the female fan base will flock to it.

But are the true female sports fans actually buying into this?

As a female sports fan, before a word is spoken you are automatically determined as inferior of sports knowledge simply because of your gender. You constantly have to prove your "fan hood knowledge" to the males and even die hard female sports fans every time you step into a stadium, walk into a sports bar or join a tailgating cookout.

So if your a female and automatically have the  your  fanhood cards stacked against you before you utter a word, the question is....Is it ever ok to wear pink to a sporting event?

I am one of the rare sports fans that loves pink. I wear the color all the time. I have shoes, dresses, skirts, head bands etc all donned with pink and yes, even some glitter.

One thing I do not own (and refuse to own) is a pink sports jersey. In my opinion, the minute you put on a pink jersey, you are setting the female fan base back by at least 5 years. When seen at a game, you are immediately thought of as "the girl who got a free ticket to the game and couldn't point out the quarterback on a football team with two hands and a map".

On the other side, I do know two (yes only 2!) girls that own pink jerseys and legitimately know the game. I made the comment to them of "no female should wear a pink jersey to a game" which was quickly followed up with a "why not?!" It seemed like they have been told this before.

"I have a pink jersey and I'm still a huge football fan". In response, I had no idea what to say. I felt bad for insulting her fanhood but in all honestly, when I see a girl in a pink jersey I immediately disqualify any knowledge she may have on the game and do not give her a chance to redeem herself unless it is a lengthy conservation.

Is this unfair? Absolutely. You should be allowed to wear whatever you want, where ever you want. The End.

But in sports, it is not that simple and never cut and dry. If its not the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness month) and you are over the age of 12 you should not wear pink. Period. Doing so is cause for immediate disqualification of sports fan hood.

I am happy to say that sports leagues are starting to catch onto this and making a variety of women's sports clothes. Though they have a long way to come, there are many options out there to make your own custom sports clothes or to simply just wear non-branded team colored clothing. Another good option to always go for the trusty blue jeans with a team t shirt.

So what do you think? Can a girl be considered a credible sports fan if you wear pink clothing to the game? Share your comments below.
