Now THAT's a GuysGirl

Written by Blythe Brumleve | 23 February 2011

Growing up in Cleveland Heights, Justine Siegal spent her summers catching the train with her grandfather to watch Indians games.

Now, she is throwing BP to the guys who don the uniforms she has grown up loving; the first female to ever do so in MLB history.

As a life long baseball fan, Siegal has spent most of her time not too far away from the diamond. She both pitched and played first base on her high school men’s baseball team, was the only female assistant coach for a men’s college team in Springfield, Mass and was the first woman to ever coach a men’s pro team in 2009 for the Brockton Rox.

The following video has been out on the internet for a few months but since February is Girl Gaming month, what an appropriate video to educate those less knowledgeable on how girl gamers really act on the internet.

Normally, girl gamers are characterized as lonely, fat, unattractive people who just picked up a controller thinking it was a hair dryer.

We want to blow your brains away, we want to sneak up behind you and put a knife into your spinal cord with only seconds later take a sniper rifle to blow your brain away from over secret hideout 100 yards away.

Does this sound cruel and unusual? Perhaps.

But its also the truth. Because if you play online, you better have thick skin no matter what gender you are. F bombs, creative cussing and even a "make me a sandwich" are all insults that  are gloriously thrown at one unsuspecting gentleman in the video below...

Special thanks to Scott Fichter for thinking of me when he saw this video.

[FYI- language is definitely not suitable for work or around kids]

Its only a few days into Girl Gaming Month and we already have the fantastic news of Annie "Ecstacy" Leung being crowed the Guitar Hero World Champion.

From the OC Weekly out of California:

The fast-fingered Annie Leung of Irvine set the female world record for a single track on Guitar Hero III, racking up 789,349 points on the expert level of "Through the Fire and Flames" by the band DragonForce. The September 2010 achievement is documented in the Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition, which hit store shelves this month.

Annie grew up in California and has played games for quite some time when she got hooked on Unreal Tournament. She prides herself in wins and hopes to be a role model to other girls out there who want to get into gaming.

Its always awesome to see other girl gamers out there but its especially cool when they are the best of the best when the boys are playing too. Big time Kudos.

Who doesn't love a good video of someone messing up terribly during the National Anthem? Well, you probably wouldn't if its a little girl. Especially a little girl as cute as 8 year old Elizabeth Hughes.

Elizabeth was booked to sing the famous song for an AHL Norfolk Admirals (TB Lightning's affiliate) game against the Connecticut Whale (NY Rangers' affiliate) last Friday night when as soon as she was hitting the homestretch, she froze and forgot the words (about the 1:30 mark).

Besides a loud laugh by a lady close the cameraman, the little girl didn't seem phased at all. Only a few seconds went by with her pausing before the crowd started to sing right along with her.

With no fear in her face, Elizabeth gathered herself and finished out the rest of the song strong.

Much love to Elizabeth for the cuteness but especially for not getting scared and running off the ice like some others have done before her (and most of us would do today in the same position.) Also, hats off to the guys for seeing her in trouble, jumping to help her out and giving her a little stick tap at the end of the song.

She impressed the team so much, she already received another invite to sing at another game where she will surely knock it out of the park.

Editors Note: At the time of this publishing, it was thought the little girl forgot the words, but it was later learned that the mic actually cut out on her. While she briefly pauses, she does continue to sing the song until the mic cuts back on. Further Kudos to Elizabeth for not faulting under pressure!

Exclusive interview with avid Jaguar fan Holly Goleski and her mission to create a Jag fan "one Kindergartner at a time"

Its that time of the year when you think about all the things you are grateful for and you spend time with those you truly care about.

But for Jag fans, its also a special time because the hometown Jaguars are doing something that hasn't been done in a very long time: Be in control of their own playoff destiny.

Now, its no secret that the fan base of the Jaguars has come into speculation from the National media due to the lack of ticket sales in 2009 but in 2010, the team has not recorded a single blackout and in playoff contention with the leading rushing game in the league.

To go along with the resurgence of the team, a whole new crop of fan is being created with the younger generations in Jacksonville and part of that help is Neptune Beach Kindergarten teacher Holly Goleski.

Holly wrote, taught and practiced with a song based off the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas with Jaguar verbiage instead.

Since the video's debut a week ago, the view count has risen to almost 10K proving many locals around town are absolutely falling in love with the song and Ms. Goleski's class.

We were lucky enough to have Holly answer some questions for us on how the song creation came about, what she hopes to gain from the popularity and even hear about her Friday/Monday Jaguar chats in the classroom going over previews and reviews on the game.

Internet comes to the rescue of 1st grade girl was bullied at school for liking Star Wars

katie star wars bully december 10

Katie isn't your "normal" 1st grader. She's the only one in her class who's adopted, Jewish, wears glasses and has to wear an eye patch due to a lazy eye. Katie also happens to looooooooooove Star Wars.

She loves Star Wars so much, she used to take a SW water bottle to school everyday when one day her mother noticed she started taking a pink water bottle in to school.

When Katie's mom asked her daughter why she made the switch, Katie began to cry that "every one at school says Star Wars is only for boys".

Katie's mom, Carrie Goldman, naturally felt horrible that her daughter that was getting bullied. "Is this how it starts? Do kids find someone who does something differently and start to beat it out of her, first with words and sneers? Must my daughter conform to be accepted?" Goldman wrote in her blog, Portrait of an Adoption.

ESPN interview highlights what she has in common with an elite athlete

The always gorgeous and hardworking Beyonce recently sat down with ESPN's Hannah Storm to talk sports, her career, favorite athletes and the things she admires about them.

Beyonce, who is also Nintendo's spokeswoman for the DS, opens up in the interview about how she admires athletes like Kobe Bryant, Manny Pacquiao and Serena Williams for their hard work, determination and focus. Things clearly, Beyonce does not lack.

"I really relate to people who were born to do something and get lost in the moment. I really relate to them (Kobe, Serena & Pacquiao) know all of the hard work it takes to get to where you're at. When everyone else is partying, you can't drink. When everyone else is celebrating Thanksgiving, you're at  your house dribbling the ball or rehearsing in your man-socks."

"Its all about sacrificing, making choices, working hard, having drive and I think its a great message to everyone" Beyonce said.

Personally, I adore Beyonce. I don't have to tell you that she's talented and clearly drop dead gorgeous but I admire someone who works so hard at their craft but doesn't have to put their personal business out there or get in trouble in stay in the backs of people's mind.

Its a pretty good interview of woman who frankly doesn't get enough credit for all the good she does; especially without the emotional baggage ala Lindsey Lohan.

Thankfully ok but says "next time I go, I'll just sit a little farther away"

Flyers fan 7 year old Isabella was going to her first NHL hockey game with her father Troy Kowalski when on a freak play, a deflected puck off Senators winger Ryan Shannon flew into the stands and struck Isabella in the head.

Though only suffering a black eye (thankfully--a 13 year old died years ago watching the Columbus Blue Jackets after being struck in the head) Isabella's father Troy was naturally a bit shaken saying “Everything happened so quick -- there’s no reaction time -- you couldn’t see it. Just hear the worst sound of your life. The tone of her voice when she called, ‘Poppy.’ And I looked over and saw the hole on her head.”

Isabella was taken to the hospital and received five stitches above her eye and has a pretty bad black eye but overall in good spirits. She's received some goodies from the Flyers and Ryan Shannon gave her one of his sticks.

While in the hospital, Ms. Hardcore actually wrote a letter to Shannon saying “Thank you for the hockey stick, I feel better. I got five stitches but they don’t hurt.”

Atta girl!

Boyfriend videotapes his girlfriend crying after loss to Kentucky and then gets beat up

As a female fan, sometimes you are guilty of taking a loss, well, like a girl. Most of the time you are just upset or pissed off. But there are some losses that are so devastating, you do indeed cry about the loss.

My moment has only really come once; 2003 Game 7 ALCS. For Red Sox fans, I've already said enough. I literally locked myself in my room, threw myself on my bed and started crying before Boone could round the bases. I then was "too distraught" the next day and called into work.

Just f#$king ridiculous.

But were girls and sometimes we take our loyalty a little too far. As in the case with this lovely South Carolina Gamecocks fan.

After beating the #1 ranked team Alabama the week before, USC lost to Kentucky and she is in a dark room, crying to herself on how her team could lose after beating such a good team. (Jaguars anyone?)

Best quote: "We lost to Kentucky really? This isn't basketball" [in a crying voice of course]

Cutest thing about the video? The boyfriend is trying not to laugh at her and saying words of encouragement even though he is video taping the whole thing. Then he proceeds to get hit. And rightfully so.

Has your team ever broke your heart to the point of crying? Or do you think it could never happen to you? (better knock on wood!)

Impressive life sized replica of the TMNT Van includes everything from the blasters to the decals

For the past year and a half, 23 year old college student Brittney Schneck has worked part time in her father's garage to pay for insurance, books and well....a complete life sized replica of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's van.

"The Turtles played a huge role in my childhood," Schneck said. "Growing up with all my male cousins, playing Ninja Turtles while my Uncle Harry (Uncle Shredder) chased us around doing an exact voice of The Shredder. He used to drive us all around in his Caravan and when I see one, I just think of the Turtles and all the memories."

The website Jalopnik interviewed Schneck  saying she "hand-painted and stenciled the exterior colors and fabricated the ray gun, spoiler and other add-ons from scratch. It's not just cosmetic craft; Schneck has rebuilt and replaced most of the Caravan's mechanical parts, from a new radiator, brakes, axles and head gasket down to a clip for the hood prop rod, color-matched to the paint scheme that extends to the engine bay."

Major props to Brittney as this was clearly a labor of love in paying for all the parts herself and actually doing the work. Another girl giving geeks a good name!
