When the first Saturday in May rolls around, horse racing fans declare a National holiday in Louisville, Kentucky for the Kentucky Derby.
Being as how my family immigrated to Louisville from Germany in the 1800's, the Kentucky Derby is pretty much religion.
Along with the nostalgia of the horses, food and drinks; the fashion is where most women dedicate their time to.
Whether your going to a bar, a Derby party or attending the Derby itself, your choice of shoes, dress and most importantly the hat all come into play.
So what do you wear if you plan on celebrating the Kentucky Derby?

Clothes
The same rules apply for clothes as they do for shoes. Dress to impress if you are headed to the Grand Stand, otherwise, opt for a classic spring/summery dress or skirt. Cute but comfy is key for an enjoyable time watching the race.
The All Important Hat
The hat is the single most important piece of clothing you will put on for Derby day. Whether its a cute little hat or an extravagant hat that makes for strategic walking, it is the staple. Its best to choose a hat based on your personality. After all, if you don't feel comfortable in it, you won't enjoy wearing it. A typical hat matches your outfit and was either handmade or bought at a local store and then spruced up with at home accessories. A must is the classic "Derby Swoop" where one side of the hat fall over one of your eyes. To get some more ideas on hats, head over to my friend at Stiletto Sports where they have taken the liberty of searching Amazon for hours to find the most classic and modern Derby hats.
Still want more ideas? The girls over at the Today Show broke it all down for you and even included some life savers you can throw right in your purse.
